Abstract

This study compares and analysis the complimentary speech acts of Americans and Koreans in the try-to-eat food reaction videos. Compliment strategy and compliment function are used for the analysis. The data collected from two YouTube videos named “Americans React to Korean Snacks!! // 한국 과자를 처음 먹어본 미국인들의 반응?!” and “Koreans Try 'American Snacks' For The First Time!!! [UNBOXING GIFT]”. The results revealed that Americans and Korean used explicit compliments more than other compliment strategies. However, regarding the following strategies, Americans used implicit more than non-compliment, whereas Koreans used non-compliment more than implicit compliments. Moreover, Koreans used all the compliment functions according to Wolfson (1983) theory, whereas Americans only used four of them. A conclusion that can be drawn from all the results is that the cultural and social values of each speaker's country have an impact on the compliment speech acts they use when speaking.
